Throat Song - Canto Gutural - 5

Throat-Song

Let your throat-song
be clear and strong enough

to make an emperor fall full-length, suppliant, at the door..
Canto Gutural

Que tu canto gutural
sea tan claro y fuerte

que haga que un emperador caiga cuan largo es, suplicante, ante la puerta.

  1. Psychologist Abraham Maslow developed the idea of the following 6 hierarchy of needs levels –
    1. What we need to stay alive
    2. Safety needs
    3. Love and belonging
    4. Self-esteem
    5. Self-actualization
    6. Self-transcendence
The first four levels are called deficiency needs. If a person is stuck on one of these levels they will feel that they need more (more love for example) in order to be OK. A person can die having lived their life stuck on any one of the first four levels; always looking outside of themselves for what they have failed to find inside. A well intended parent could always push their child for more resulting in an adult that possesses an inner wounded child, never good enough, who endlessly asks the people around them -Am I OK? A traumatized refugee may never feel safe. The vast majority of people die never reaching level 5 or 6.
A self-actualized person accepts reality as it is and thus has a clearer view of reality. Using that clarity they are better able to help themselves and the world around them to evolve. They are spontaneous, acting rather than reacting. Their morality is anchored inside of themselves rather than inside their culture or fear of punishment. They often have peak experiences consisting of moments of intense joy, wonder, awe and ecstasy. Now we are talking about the throat-songs in Rumi’s poem. Maslow states that a life spent in self-actualization can result in a plateau experience- a continuous unending peak experience of life. Now I am talking of Maslow’s level six. Here ego’s feeling of separation is transcended and the mystical experience of oneness with all and the source of all are realized.
